This past Sunday, October 26th, incumbent Dilma Rousseff won the Brazilian elections against her opponent Aecio Neves. Rousseff won a very narrow victory, securing 51.6% of the vote over Neves' 48.4%. During the 2nd round, Rousseff heavily capitalized on the PT's history of social advancements, suggesting that a Neves presidency would put those advancements at risk. Neves, on the other hand, accused Rousseff of ineffectively dealing with the country's rampant corruption, an issue that the president has promised to tackle during her second term.

Peter Hakim discute la victoria de Dilma Rousseff y la influencia de Lula da Silva en las elecciones.

Watch experts discuss Rousseff's victory at Dialogue-Atlantic Council event here.

Rousseff will have to deal with a sluggish economy (her first term posted the slowest economic growth in 20 years), above-target inflation, and a budget deficit, while delivering to an exceedingly demanding middle class. The president is well aware of these challenges, and called for unity as she promises to enact wide social and political changes in order to reduce corruption and respond to the country's growing social discontent.

The Dialogue's program on Brazil and the Southern Cone examines the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Chile. Issues include democratic governance, energy, trade capacity building, the environment, and international relations. The program regularly hosts meetings and events that draw important political analysts, politicians, NGO and labor leaders, and economists.

The Latin America Working Group of the Dialogue met in Brazil on December 2011, convening the region’s leading analysts and practitioners to discuss Latin America’s democratic, economic, social, and political development as well as the role of regional institutions and the influence of hemispheric actors, such as Brazil.
